After Hurricane Dorian forced evacuations from the North Carolina coast, 60 UNC Wilmington students and staff were welcomed with open arms by UNC Greensboro, the Division of Student Affairs, and the Recreation & Wellness department. The evacuees arrived Tuesday, September 3, and were provided bedding, towels and meal cards, and slept on cots set up for them in one of the Kaplan Center gyms.

“They’re honorary Spartans for the week, so anything they need, we’re providing to them; access to the dining hall and other spaces on campus. We’re treating them as our students,” UNCG emergency management director Zach Smith said. “Somewhere to sleep, to bed down with all of the amenities our students have here on campus. To ensure that one, they’re safe, and also have the amenities that they need to continue their studies and progress through the week.”

“Most of them are travel-abroad students or those who may have family who live an extended distance, and it just wasn’t feasible for them to go home or seek shelter elsewhere.”

On Thursday, September 5, UNCG SGA members hosted a game night with the UNCW students at the Kaplan Center. Students enjoyed friendly competition with Monopoly, Uno, Connect 4, What Do You Meme, and Jenga. The evacuees headed back to Wilmington Friday evening.
