Dr. Cathy Akens is the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs at UNC Greensboro. In this role, she provides leadership for staff who oversee a wide array of programs and services that focus on impacting student success and learning through the co-curricular experience. Her work in Student Affairs focuses on the areas of student well-being, student engagement, and campus climate and inclusion. Before joining UNCG, Dr. Akens worked at Florida International University, where she served as Associate Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students, Assistant Vice President, and Director of Residential Life. She held other positions in residential life at both FIU and Bowling Green State University. Dr. Akens has regularly taught graduate courses in the areas of student development, campus crisis management, and contemporary issues in higher education. She has been engaged in professional service and scholarship throughout her career. In 2019, she co-edited a book on college students and their environments, which explores how universities create culturally inclusive and engaging communities. Dr. Akens earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from the University of Toledo and a Master of Arts in College and University Administration from Michigan State University. Her Doctorate in Higher Education is from Florida International University. Throughout her career in Higher Education and Student Affairs, Dr. Akens has established herself as a dedicated advocate for students, a proven leader and mentor.


Dr. Brett Carter

Dr. Brett Carter is the Associate Vice Chancellor and Dean of Students at UNC Greensboro. He has been involved in higher education for over 30 years. He is responsible for a wide range of Student Affairs functions including the Dean of Students Office, Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities, Offices of Accessibility Resources and Services, Military-Affiliated Services, Counseling Center, Campus Recreation and Wellness, and Student Health Services. He has a long history of diverse work experiences with student housing, judicial and academic integrity programs, student support services, first-year experience programs, and crisis management. Dr. Carter also oversees student policy development and co-chairs the Behavioral Assessment Team (BAT). His hobbies include golfing, camping, and hiking.






Dr. Adrienne M. Craig

Dr. Adrienne Craig is the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs. In this role, she provides leadership for Campus Activities & Programs, Career & Professional Development, Elliott University Center, the Office of Intercultural Engagement, and the Office of Leadership & Civic Engagement. Previously, she served as the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs at Columbus State University (Ga.) She has over 16 years of experience working in various facets of Student Affairs, and is passionate about developing student leaders, having created campus-wide leadership programs at multiple universities. Dr. Craig is a member of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, the Association of Fraternal Leadership & Values, and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Dr. Craig earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Old Dominion University and a master’s degree from Virginia Tech. She earned her doctorate in Leadership & Innovation from Wilmington University. 



George Still
Director of Assessment

George Still is the Director of Assessment. He joined the team in December 2017 after spending three years as the Director for Institutional Planning, Effectiveness, and Research at Danville Community College. He has also served  at SUNY Plattsburgh. Still earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Religion and French and a Master of Arts Degree in Christian Education, both from Campbell University. He has completed additional master’s coursework in Social Work from Virginia Commonwealth University. He is currently a doctoral candidate in Sociology at Virginia Tech.  Still’s role at UNC Greensboro is to further a culture of research and regularly provides support in the development and evaluation of impact measures for the Division of Student Affairs. In addition, Still continues to conduct research to highlight how UNC Greensboro Student Affairs programming impacts student success, satisfaction and the community.

Dr. Buggs has been a higher education administrator/instructor for over 20 years – Student Affairs is her calling and working with students is her passion. She joined UNCG in 2017, and in her current position she oversees SpartanConnect, where she works with students to connect them to campus activities and experiences. She also serves as an FYE 101 instructor and as co-advisor to the Graduate Student Association. She has managed various areas at her previous institutions including student activities, judicial affairs, new student orientation, fraternity/sorority life, union administration, assessment and academic advising. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in English from FIU, a Masters in Higher Education Administration from Florida State University, and a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from the University of New Orleans. She has lived in five states and on both coasts.



Coretta R. Walker
Assistant to the Vice Chancellor

Coretta currently serves as the Assistant to the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, where she provides leadership to key Division projects, supporting the Division’s marketing direction and brand, coordinating Division events, advising the University Marshals and Golden Chain Honor Society, and supporting the Division’s fundraising efforts. Walker earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology from UNC Chapel Hill, her Masters of Education in Higher Education Administration from North Carolina State University, and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Educational Studies at the University of North Carolina Greensboro. Walker loves all things monograms, polka dots, and pink, and is passionate about dance, football, and Debbie cakes.






Jolie Helton
Marketing & Communications Coordinator

Jolie Helton joined the Student Affairs team in May 2019 as Marketing and Communications Coordinator for the Division. She maintains brand standards throughout the Division, is responsible for the development of comprehensive communication and marketing plans, oversees design and creative efforts, and manages the Division’s social media platforms. Prior to joining UNCG, she served as Communications Specialist for the City of High Point. She also has experience in marketing and promotions for multiple Division I collegiate athletics departments. She earned her Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing at the University of Georgia, and is currently pursuing her MBA through UNCG’s Bryan School of Business. She enjoys weightlifting, cooking, Georgia Football, thrift shopping and her three dogs – Roxy, Gotti, and Goddess. 






Gretchen Pugh
Graphic Designer for Print and Digital Materials

As the Division’s graphic designer, Gretchen Pugh creates print and digital promotional materials for major events, initiatives, and services for departments within Student Affairs, including the Division office. Gretchen earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts with concentration in Graphic Design at Longwood College in Virginia. A standout golf student-athlete for the Lancers, Gretchen is an NCAA All-American and a Longwood Hall-of-Fame inductee. 







Melvalyn Pate

Melvalyn Pate joined Student Affairs in 2016 and is responsible for the overall management of business operations in the Division Office. She also serves as a resource for departments throughout the Division. Melvalyn has dedicated over 26 years working in higher education, and she began her career at UNCG in 2003 in the Lloyd International Honors College where she served as Budget and Operations Manager. In her spare time, Melvalyn enjoys spending time with family, traveling, and shopping for antiques.







Michelle Parson
Business Service Coordinator

Michelle Parson is the Business Services Coordinator for Student Affairs, where she works to support staff as the link between departments within the Division and Human Resources to complete position actions and other business processes. She earned her B.A. in Speech Communication from North Carolina A&T State University. In her leisure, she gets the most pleasure from time spent with family, enjoying great food, a good book, Netflix, or listening to a podcast. 







Alexis Thonen

Alexis Thonen has been with Student Affairs since 2016 and with UNC Greensboro since 1997. She serves as the Executive Assistant, providing administrative support to Dr. Akens, Dr. Carter, and Dr. Craig, as well as providing overall administrative support to the Division office. Alexis enjoys spending time with her family, live music, and a has a strong passion for animal rescue and advocacy.
